Back to School!

Utah Corgis -- Back to School

The Taflar "class" paying close attention

Now it's Fall, and human kids all around the US are heading back to school. It is also the time to consider school/classes for our furry kids as well!

Why not consider some "brush up" work on some old skills, or even maybe learn some new ones? If your dog is agility trained, why not supplement with some obedience classes? To break the old myth, you really *can* teach an old dog new tricks! You can even sometimes teach old owners new tricks!!

Take a look at our recommended reading list below for some books that will help you understand your companion(s) a little better, and that can help with suggestions for new skills!

Teva and Snicket "boning up" on their schoolwork

We've all seen the image of the apple on the teacher's desk....but what's a corgi to do?

For the new school year, Teva has come up with an apple-cinnamon cookie recipe, which she has listed below. Take a few to your classes and offer them to your teacher....it may not guarantee passing scores, but it never hurts, right? They are sure to make you "teacher's pet"! (Judges love 'em, too!!)

Back-to-School Apple Cinnamon Bites

1 cup flour (all purpose or whole wheat)
2 large eggs
1 cup quick rolled oats
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup canola oil
1/3 cup honey
1 cup apple, diced and cored

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease 2 baking sheets with non-stick vegetable spray.

Sift together the flour, oats, baking powder and cinnamon in bowl and set aside. In a large bowl, stir together the oil and honey (I put my honey container in the microwave for about 30 seconds to make the honey easier to pour), and whisk until well blended. Add the eggs, one at a time, stirring to combine. Add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture and stir to form a smooth dough (will be very soft). Fold in the apples (we used fuji in our first batch and johnagolds in our second…both were very good).

Drop dough by teaspoonful (you need a little less than a teaspoonful to make the “bites” size)1 ˝ inches apart on the baking sheets. Bake for 12 to15 minutes or until light golden.

Makes 40 + small bites or 20-25 larger cookies. Just like with all cookies, they will keep longer if you refrigerate them. Freezing will keep them fresh for about a month.
